How to make onion juice for topical application on hair/scalp?

Take 2-3 onions depending on the length of your hair and grind it into a pulp using a blender.

If you have more time on hand, take the pulp and use it as it is by applying it on the hair and scalp. This may take longer to wash off but is effective.

If time is limited, then drain out the pulp using a strainer and use only juice. Applying only juice will be less messier and will be easier to wash off.

How to store onion juice?

After making onion juice, store it in a container or a spray bottle and refrigerate it.

Spray bottles are easily available in any supermarket. Spraying onion juice helps in even and hassle free topical application on hair, scalp.

The juice should NOT be stored for more than 3-4 days.

For best results, it is ideal to make fresh juice, as and when required and apply it immediately to the hair.

Steps to apply onion juice on hair and scalp:

  • Spray bottle (for onion juice to be stored in)
  • Cotton swab
  • Shoulder cover
  • Shower cap
  • Tissue papers

Steps to apply

  • Take hair into partitions and keep separate to see the scalp.
  • Slowly start spray the onion juice on to the scalp and let it sink in.
  • Massage with fingers, now and then.
  • After covering the entire scalp, spray onion juice directly along the length of the hair.
  • Clip up or bun up the hair and then, use a shower cap and cover head.
  • Let it dry for 20-30 minutes. During this time, you may feel warm heat emanating out of the scalp, this is the scalp being stimulated.
  • If time permits, soak up the cotton swab with some more onion juice and dab on scalp areas which dried up. Let it dry for another 10-15 minutes.
  • Rinse with plain water, thoroughly and dry the hair. You may use a mild shampoo after a day, to get rid of the smell.
  • If the onion juice smell is too pungent and you would like to get rid of the smell, use a mild shampoo to lather and wash off the smell.

Make use of the tissue papers to wipe the dripping onion juice from the scalp sides. And make sure you have a shoulder cover (either a cloth or a disposable sheet) to avoid onion stains on your clothing.

How often can we apply onion juice to the hair

Application of onion juice everyday can be done depending on your requirement and tolerance levels for the pungent smell of onion, tolerance of your scalp skin.

On an average, 2-3 days per week should do the magic and to start seeing results of hair growth, along with shiny, healthy hair.

How long does it take for onion juice to show hair regrowth?

Research indicates that onion juice application can be done, at least once every 2 days, for a duration of minimum of 4 weeks or more. If applied diligently, it normally takes about 1 month and more to start seeing results of hair regrowth.

What precautions need to be taken before applying onion juice?

Due to the high sulphur content of onions, it is advisable to do a patch test on your arm skin.

Apply fresh onion juice on a 2 inch width area on arm skin and let it stay on until dry.

Observe if there are any signs of extreme burning or continued itching or redness of skin.

While some of us could be allergic to onions, even those who are non-allergic to onions could see such redness or burning signs(continued signs), on topical application of the onion juice.

If you observe continuous burning or itching or redness, then stop usage or minimize frequency of application.

What if onion juice is not showing any signs of hair regrowth?

Due to the sensitive nature of some people’s scalp skin, redness or itching/burning may be experienced on the topical application of onion juice/pulp. Nevertheless, one can minimize the burning or redness by using the onion juice in combination with a mix of another essential oil or plant juice or pulp.
